Benefits of Flatbed Semi Trailer

Versatility
Flatbed semi trailer can haul freight that would never fit inside a dry van. They excel at transporting oversized or irregularly shaped items—anything from industrial machinery to oversized steel pipes or prefab building components. Standard dry vans and other types of trailers simply cannot accommodate these loads, making flatbed the go-to solution for freight that exceeds the dimensions of enclosed trailers.

Ease of Loading/Unloading
With no wall or roof obstructing the deck, flatbed trailers enable fast, convenient loading from virtually any angle. Forklifts or cranes can access a flatbed from the sides or above, which is invaluable for freight that can’t be forklifted through a rear door.

Increased Load Capacity
Flatbed semi trailer often accommodate heavier or bulkier loads in a single trip compared to enclosed trailers. They have higher usable weight and size capacity since there are no fixed walls constraining the cargo.
Maintenance Precautions For Flatbed Semi Trailer
Tire inflation
Maintaining proper air pressure is essential to extending the life of your trailer tires. Regularly check all tires with a properly calibrated air pressure gauge and inspect for punctures, cuts, or damaged valve core stems. Take extra care to maintain the inside dual tires, as wear on these tires can go unnoticed.
Wheel ends
Check all hubcaps regularly for leaks to prevent water seepage, and inspect wheel ends for proper lubrication and water contamination. Water intrusion can lead to bearing and seal failure, which can lead to axle damage. It’s important to resolve seepage issues and maintain adequate lubrication levels.
Landing gear
Pressure-wash the landing gear and chassis to remove any dirt or grit that has collected during use. Lubricate the grease fittings. Check attachment points for proper torque levels on the landing gear and bracing. You depend on your landing gear to stabilize your flatbed while it’s detached from the truck, so keeping it maintained helps to ensure your equipment remains level.
Types Of Flatbed Semi Trailer
Flatbed semi trailers come in several types to meet different transportation needs. The most common types include standard flatbeds, lowboy trailer, removable gooseneck trailer (RGN), drop decks (step decks), and extendable flatbeds, each offering unique advantages based on the cargo being transported.
The standard flatbed trailers are the most common, featuring a flat, open deck without sides or a roof, allowing for easy loading from any direction. These trailers are versatile and typically range from 48 to 53 feet in length.
Step deck trailers, often referred to as drop deck trailers, have two deck levels: a higher deck near the tractor and a lower deck after the wheels. This design accommodates taller cargo that exceeds standard height limits. They are often used for transporting machinery, vehicles, and equipment that can’t fit on a standard flatbed.
Extendable flatbed trailers (Stretch Flatbeds) are ideal for long cargo, such as steel beams or pipes, that exceed the length of a standard flatbed. These trailers can extend from a standard length (48 feet) up to 80 feet or more, depending on the model.
Lowboy trailer, often called a low-bed or double-drop trailer, is a specialized type of flatbed trailer designed primarily for transporting heavy loads that exceed the height limits of standard flatbeds. With a lower deck height, usually around 18-24 inches off the ground, lowboy trailers can carry tall cargo up to 12 feet, such as construction machinery, industrial equipment, and agricultural vehicles, without needing additional permits.
Removable gooseneck trailer (RGN) is a specialized flatbed trailer highly suited for transporting heavy machinery, thanks to its unique, detachable gooseneck. This design not only enhances loading efficiency but also supports stability with a low center of gravity, ideal for transporting tall cargo up to 12 feet in height without requiring special permits.
